Fashion Illustration 2012

Here is an assortment of beautiful works by my amazing students. I'm hoping to entice new students to one of my favorite classes. I take a fine arts approach to fashion illustration. In the past we have done charcoal drawing, collage, xerox transfers, watercolors, ink, markers, monoprinting, and more. The students that have continually taken this class with me have made impressive portfolios at a young age.

Below you will see some shoe design done in tempera, colored sand, and jewels. Black and white illustrations done with charcoal and white tempera are thoughtfully placed on pages from and old world atlas. Playful collage with cut outs from magazines, different patterned papers, and fabric. Also, some traditional fashion illustrations with conte crayon on craft paper.

Panel Paintings

Using acrylic paints, each person will receive four small wooden squares to make their paintings on.  There will be guided instruction with room to explore and find your “painting voice." We will look at artists that have brought panels together to make one painting (diptychs, triptychs), and consider the elements of design. The panels can be interchangeable and each mother/daughter team will have the chance to combine their panels and collaborate to create one larger painting made up of eight panels (polyptych).

 Call or email to reserve a spot. The studio fits only 3 mother/daughter pairs so reserve early!

Richard Diebenkorn

In a class of 5-8 year olds we made paintings inspired by American artist Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993). We looked at Diebenkorn’s earlier work from the late 50’s early 60’s and compared and discussed the similarities we saw to his Ocean Park series done in the 70’s and 80’s. They recognized the abstracted shapes in the Ocean Park series and how they translated from his earlier more representational work. This helped them to understand how they wanted to think about landscape in their own painting. From there we used a ruler and charcoal pencil to make lines, and break up our canvas paper. They had the challenge of taping over their lines with tape. They were quite amazing in how they handled the tape. We also talked about the difference between transparent paint (wash), and opaque paint. This is a recurring theme with my students. We used a wash effect and changed colors between the shapes. The next week they removed the tape to see their beautiful results.

Fashion Illustration—Fall Session

Picasso's Bull Series 

I had the students study Picasso's bulls and take note of how he broke down the image, and how he took parts away each time. He simplified the image and brought it to a more abstract form. I then had them do the same thing with their fashion illustration. This is a great exercise in making decisions about what to minus from their image to bring it to an abstract form, yet also be able to recognize the original drawing/painting. Below are black and white and color versions.

Large Fashion Illustrations

Here I had the students first do a sketch from a magazine photo on 8.5'x11" paper. After they had a feel for the drawing they worked in conte crayons and pastels to bring the drawing to an almost life like size. We do a lot of practice drawing to learn proportions. We sketch the figure, either from mannequins, or pose for each other. These large pieces were done at the end of the eight week session, and showcase some of the skills the students learned throughout their class time.

Summer Camp Sketchbooking

Every morning we started camp with a sketchbook drawing. Before drawing, we always began this portion of the day by looking at examples of artist's notebooks, followed by a demonstration of materials or a process. Then, the class was prompted to take on a specific challenge. I also read to them, as well as gave a demonstration in response to the readings, to model a technique or idea. The above movie highlights one student's notebook, followed by still-photo excerpts from others.
